These are great tips. The hardest part is breaking ourselves out of the funk. When you are only responsible to yourself, then it gets difficult. If you at least have an accountability partner, you can face the fact that you are in a funk and start making your way out. Make your way out BEFORE you get into dire straights.

Just reading back through your posts and came across this one. I've been running my company now for almost three years, from four different US States and two different other countries, and I can say the lessons I've learned are invaluable. I wouldn't change my situation for the world, as it allows me all of the above and more in my life (namely I've been able to concentrate on outside interests more such as blogging (as you can see from my posts on one of my blogs) and cooking), but I'm also able to explore additional business interests outside of my primary income streams.

However, I've found one of the most important things to keep in mind is that although you might get annoyed by the people in your office (bosses, coworkers and others), they still provide you with much-needed social interaction. That social piece can be very important, and like Michael above, I work from a coffee shop a couple of times a week in order to be around people. This and time management are crucial and if you think you can pull these two things off, then I say go for whatever idea you've been drumming around in the back of your head. It is still work, but it is always easier to do what you love than it seems at first.

Interesting!
CommentLuv helps you reward your commentators by separating their name from their keywords in the link to their site. This gives them improved anchor text, which can help their site rank higher in the search engine results.
You can now leave a comment with your name as well as a keyword of your choice here and get a PR5 link back to your site! How cool is that? People pay big bucks for that and all you have to do is comment here.

SOCOM,

I have to agree with you, I to would like more comments left but at the same time to have comments for the sake of links or simply to say "yea I agree" seems kind of silly.
Blogging is about conversation, or at least I would like to think that it is, I would like to see more of the threads go in more of a converdational way,

Could you imagine sitting at Starbucks and havin a conversation that goes the way of most blog topics, LOL, I'd feel like I was stuck out on the back fence with Hank Hill and friends

Have a great day,

Richard

To help people uncover their talents, Gallup introduced the first version of its online assessment, Strengths Finder, in the 2001 management book Now, Discover Your Strengths. The book spent more than five years on the bestseller lists and ignited a global conversation, while Strengths Finder helped millions to discover their top five talents.

When you consider the costs of status quo in your like $12 is a veritable bargain. Really I'm amazed they're able to keep the book so affordable with the current economic situation. We spend thousands trying to make ourselves look better with diets, exercise etc, why not spend a few dollars to improve your mind?

You have to buy the book in order to take the test. In the book is a 1 time activation code for the online test. Since the book only costs about $12 I thought it was well worth it.

Great tips and I'm glad you read Brian's blog (I love it). I try to follow this type of list while generating leads and contacts, too, and it's been great so far.

Since your entry focuses on lead gen, I thought I'd let you know about the website I work for called Salesconx. We're an online marketplace for business referrals focused on generating b2b leads. It's free to use and you only pay when you purchase a verified lead from another user. Take a look around and let me know what you think.

In the best of companies, lead generation can seldom account for more than half of the new business. The best reps must create their own opportunities. I read recently that the average company has a 40% turn-over each year (Smart & Alexander, “Topgrading for Sales” Penguin Books, Ltd). It is probably these salespeople who sit back and wait for company generated leads that loses his job. And yet with few exceptions salespeople give up on the sales inquiries much to soon, regardless of the source. Research always indicates that the life of an inquiry is as long as 12 months. Many articles on the Sales Lead Management Association address this issue. I like the Ten Tips, especially #7 Rigorously Qualify, and # 9, Develop A Nurturing Plan. Brian Carroll always gives memorable advice.

Sales reps can also see a person who wants to buy something and get them to. If a person just wanders into a used car lot because of boredom the rep will know and give less priority to this person. These are qualities that only come with experience.

A very good article. Thanks!
