I worked for a large company for years, a Japanese company, and they would send sales and technical people to Japan all the time for routine meetings. The meeting might last for one day but with travel time you could be gone for a week. Skype would be perfect for these types of meetings and would save the company a boatload of money.

I use and love skype but it seems funny to me that companies don’t use it more. Maybe the idea is catching on but there are a lot of companies that still like to use travel for some reason.

I second this post. Skype has come in at the right time when online marketing and communication is on a high. During sales, Skype can definitely be instrumental in generating leverage for business as well as social networking.

I know this is an old post, but i stumbled upon it somehow. Skype has taken over! If skype were mobile there would be no need for anything else. I have only used it in my personal but I could see how talking face to face with customers could be useful.

I agree with you about the usefulness and reliability of WebEx. I used it for quite a while, but my biggest problem with it was that it was only compatible with IE. I think there was some sort of plugin or utility that was supposed to make it work with FireFox too but I was never able to get it to work right and that was frustrating because I use FireFox almost exclusively. Eventually I switched to GoToMeeting and it works fairly well too. -Josh

Skype are truly a great method to get a lower cost for all of your calls. Especially when you are travelling the world and want to call to your homecountry for some reason.

The only thing that worries be about Skype and other VOIP systems is the probability of dropped audio. It has happened to me and is very frustrating. I’m not sure I would use this with new clients. You could probably get away with it if you use it for established clients.

I have interviewed probably over 500 people in my career for engineers, admins and mangers. Can’t say I’ve been propositioned though (I’m a guy btw) but that’s probably about the only thing I haven’t seen. I am never ever surprised at the discrepancy between a resume and the actual candidate. I have often wondered how you could remove or reduce the burden of the personal interview but it’s just not possible. Even outsourcing for pre-interview, in my experience, does not yield the better results it should.

Skype is great, though I remember being in a meeting call over Skype a while ago and we were getting quite a few dropouts across the board. I’d have to do a bit more playing around with it before using it for a marketing meeting.

A good summary of Webex which is still the market leader in online meeting tools, which is why Cisco bought it. I agree with you that the Outlook integration makes great sense for scheduling meeings with your contacts but don’t you find Webex a little expensive? There are some great new competitors out there that can save on price without cutting on quality.Dimdim for example is an up and coming provider who is trying to take Webex head on. Worth checking out for smaller online meetings, you can host up to 20 participants for free.
